News Desk: The Meteorological Department has reported that due to cloud formations within the country, heavy to very heavy rainfall may occur tomorrow, Sunday, in four divisions. This rainfall may continue for another four consecutive days, with conditions expected to improve from next Thursday.
In its latest 24-hour forecast issued on Saturday (May 2) evening, meteorologist Omar Faruk provided this information.
He stated that due to locally formed cloud systems, many areas in the Mymensingh, Dhaka, Chattogram, and Sylhet divisions may experience heavy rainfall. There is also a possibility of thunderstorms across the country. Rainfall intensity may increase further on Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday, before decreasing from Thursday.
The forecast also mentioned that due to an existing low-pressure system, many areas in Mymensingh, Dhaka, Barishal, Chattogram, and Sylhet divisions, as well as some places in Rangpur, Rajshahi, and Khulna divisions, may experience temporary gusty winds along with moderate rainfall. Day and night temperatures across the country are expected to remain nearly unchanged.
As of Saturday evening, the highest rainfall recorded in the country was 162 mm in Srimangal, while Sylhet recorded 86 mm.
According to the Flood Forecasting and Warning Centre of the Water Development Board, due to moderate to heavy rainfall upstream in the northeastern region and very heavy rainfall in the haor basin, water levels in five rivers across three districts are flowing above the danger level. Compared to Friday, water levels in the Naljur River in Sunamganj and the Mogra River in Netrokona have risen by at least 0.8 cm. Additionally, the Bhugai-Kangsha and Someshwari rivers in Netrokona, and the Sutang River in Habiganj, are also flowing above danger levels.
Out of 46 flood monitoring stations operated by the Water Development Board, water levels at 19 stations are currently above the danger level.
Monjur Rahman, Executive Engineer at the Flood Forecasting and Warning Centre, told the media that due to pre-monsoon flooding, the flood situation in low-lying haor-adjacent areas of Netrokona and Habiganj may worsen, and new areas could become inundated.
River water levels in these regions may rise further within the next 48 hours. Additionally, low-lying haor areas in Moulvibazar district may also experience flooding.
