The Language Movement of ’52 through the lens of Maulana Bhashani Hall students of BAU.

BAU Correspondent: On the occasion of Great Martyrs’ Day and International Mother Language Day, students of the 2024–25 academic session of Maulana Bhashani Hall at Bangladesh Agricultural University (BAU) have taken a unique initiative.

They have produced a special documentary titled “One Hall, One Heart, One Vision” highlighting the turbulent days of the 1952 Language Movement and its glorious history.

On Saturday (21 February), in the first hour of the day, the documentary was screened among the hall’s students and received widespread response on social media.

The documentary skillfully portrays the history of the movement—from its beginning in 1948 to the ultimate sacrifice of Rafique, Salam, Barkat, and others on 21 February 1952, and its later global recognition as International Mother Language Day. The documentary was directed by Durjoy Mondol, a hall Chhatra Dal activist from the 2021–22 academic session, and narrated by student Opu Barman.

Badhan Mallik Protik, a student of Maulana Bhashani Hall, said, “Our main goal was to present the true history of the Language Movement and our cultural heritage to the current generation. Through filming in different locations of the hall and using historical footage, we tried to bring the documentary to life.”

Another student, Md. Nurul Bin Hasan Ontim, said, “If even one fellow student can learn the accurate history of our mother language through this creative work, then our effort will be successful. Alongside agricultural studies, the hall students’ interest and creativity toward national history are truly encouraging.”

It is worth mentioning that every year, students of Maulana Bhashani Hall observe various programs on 21 February. However, this year’s documentary has created a different level of appeal and has been praised by teachers and students of the university.
