Turkey Appoints Ambassador to Syria for the First Time in 13 Years

News Desk: After 13 long years, Turkey’s President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan has appointed a new ambassador to neighboring Syria for the first time.

According to a report by TRT World, the appointment decree signed by Erdoğan was published in the Official Gazette on Wednesday, November 19. In the decree, Turkey’s Deputy Defense Minister Nuh Yılmaz has been named as the new ambassador to Syria.

Turkey’s National Defense Minister Yaşar Güler received Yılmaz and congratulated him on his new assignment.

Expressing his gratitude for the appointment, Nuh Yılmaz thanked President Erdoğan and Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan.

On social media platform X, he wrote: “Drawing strength from the century-old strong humanitarian and cultural bonds between Turkey and Syria, we will work to develop relations in a manner that upholds the principle of good relations and contributes to peace and stability in our region.”

He further added: “I have personally witnessed the support Turkey has extended to the Syrian people during their most difficult times. From now on, alongside Turkey, we will work together with our Syrian brothers and sisters to promote the welfare, peace, and shared future of both countries’ people.”

The new Turkish ambassador to Syria was also discussed by Tom Barrett, the U.S. Ambassador to Turkey and the Special U.S. Envoy for Syria. He stated that he looks forward to working closely with Yılmaz as he begins his “historic” mission in Syria.
