Online Desk: US Middle East envoy Steve Witkoff recently spoke about Gaza and ceasefire talks in an interview. He said that the Israeli operation in Gaza has sparked widespread anger in neighboring Arab countries.
In the interview, Witkoff said he was a little vague about the Trump administration's plans for Gaza. "Our priority is to achieve stability in Gaza," he said. "Stability may mean some people will return, some may not," he added.
Regarding the two-state solution and the reconstruction of Gaza, Witkoff said, "To me, two states mean creating opportunities for a better life for the people of Gaza. But it's not just about housing. Maybe AI technology will be brought there, or large-scale data centers will be established. This will create jobs and people will be economically self-sufficient. We don't want to keep Gaza dependent only on aid."
He said Hamas wants to rule Gaza forever, which is unacceptable to the Trump administration. He noted that the United States wants Hamas to disarm. However, if Hamas agrees to disarm, they can stay there for a while and participate politically. However, he said, a terrorist organization taking over Gaza would not be acceptable to Israel.
Witkoff also claimed that Hamas is not ultimately inflexible and that it is possible to negotiate with them. However, he said that he is not negotiating directly with Hamas and is using Qatar as a mediator.
He said he doesn't think Israel wants to occupy Gaza.
Witkoff warned that Egypt could be a potential "center of concern" as the Israeli offensive in Gaza has sparked widespread anger in neighboring Arab countries. He said that to prevent regional instability, we must resolve the Gaza issue.
