Economy Desk: After the fall of the Hasina government on August 5, the true picture of the banking sector began to emerge. This led to a crisis of confidence, and customers began to withdraw money in panic. Now, household money has started returning to the banks again.

Deposits in banks increased by Tk 34,500 crore between July and December last year. The total amount of deposits in the banking sector increased to Tk 1,777,315 crore.

The latest report of Bangladesh Bank says that the amount of cash held by people outside banks has decreased by the end of last December. A large part of this money has started returning to banks. At the end of June last year, the amount of money held by people outside banks was Tk 2,90,436 crore. At the end of December, it has decreased to Tk 2,76,341 crore. That is, in the space of 6 months, about Tk 14,000 crore held by people has returned to banks.

The report says that the amount of money outside the banks at the end of October 2023 was Tk 246,000 crore. Since then, its amount has increased every month. At the end of July 2024, the amount of money outside the banks reached Tk 292,000 crore. However, since September, that money has gradually started returning to the banks.

At the end of June, the total deposits in the banking sector were Tk 17,42,798 crore. At the end of December, it increased by Tk 34,517 crore or about 2 percent. At the end of December, the banks had deposits of Tk 17,777 crore. In contrast, the amount of loans distributed by the banks was about Tk 17,2589 crore. That is, the banks distributed about 96 percent of the deposits as loans.
