Diplomatic Correspondent: The Russian House in Dhaka organized a series of commemorative events to observe the Day of Remembrance and Sorrow, honoring the millions of victims of the Great Patriotic War and marking the anniversary of the Nazi invasion of the Soviet Union on June 22, 1941.
The observances began on June 21 with a memorial programme at the Russian House in Dhaka, attended by students, members of the Soviet Alumni Association of Bangladesh (SAAB), representatives of the Liberation War Academy Trust, academics, and distinguished guests. The programme featured literary readings, musical performances, and a theatrical presentation highlighting the courage, sacrifice, and resilience of the wartime generation.
A key highlight of the event was the “Candle of Memory” campaign, during which participants paid tribute to soldiers and civilians who lost their lives during the war. The programme also included a lecture based on the exhibition “22.06.1941. Tragedy. Courage. Feat.” presented by the Museum of Victory, which explored the events of the first day of the Great Patriotic War and the heroism displayed by Soviet citizens in the face of invasion.
As part of the commemorative activities, the Russian House in Dhaka, in collaboration with the Association of Russian Compatriots in Bangladesh “Rodina,” organized another memorial event on June 23 at Tejgaon College. Students and faculty members gathered to reflect on the devastating human cost of war and the importance of preserving historical memory for future generations.
Participants also watched the acclaimed Russian war film “Brest Fortress,” which portrays the heroic defense of the fortress during the opening days of the war. A lecture based on the Museum of Victory exhibition further introduced the audience to the dramatic events of June 22, 1941, and the extraordinary courage shown by Soviet soldiers and civilians.
One of the most moving moments of the Tejgaon College programme was the creation of a Wall of Memory, made up of paper cranes crafted by students in honor of those who lost their lives during the war. The installation served as a powerful symbol of remembrance, peace, and respect for the victims of conflict.
Through these events, the Russian House in Dhaka reaffirmed its commitment to preserving historical memory, honoring the sacrifices of previous generations, and promoting peace, mutual understanding, and friendship among nations.
