Naogaon Representative: Naogaon has a population of around 3 million in 11 upazilas. This district is still far behind in terms of treatment. But still the standard of medical care in government hospitals has increased. In private clinics and hospitals the situation is like to collect money in the name of patient services. Although some clinics and hospitals provide good services, the condition of the rest is poor. The quality of healthcare there is very poor. In the hope of more profit, the clinic authority instead of the doctor conducts the operation with the ward boy or someone else associated with it.

There are allegations that patients almost died due to botched operations. According to related sources, the population of 11 upazilas of the district is about 3 million. Naogaon Sadar Hospital with 50 beds was established in 1989 to provide medical services. Then in 2005 it was increased to 100 beds. Later in April 2013, the construction work of the 8th floor building with 150 beds started at a cost of about 20 crore 54 lakh taka. A new building with 150 beds was added to the old building and increased to 250 beds. On August 31, 2020, the Ministry of Health gave administrative approval to operate a 250-bed general hospital.

However, the same is the case with the 250-bed hospital which was previously provided with the manpower. Since becoming a 250-bed general hospital, the number of patients seeking services has increased. The hospital is the only trust of the district residents. Patients come from the upazila to get services. After increasing the number of hospital beds, the residents of the district had a dream to at least benefit from the quality of medical services. But in reality it is the opposite. In reality it is a 250 bed general hospital but the operation is going on with 100 beds. The number of doctors required for these 100 beds is not even there.

Due to this, the doctors have to struggle to handle the additional patients. It is expected that the full approval of 250 beds, recruitment of manpower and infrastructural facilities will increase the quality of medical services in the hospital and reduce the suffering of the residents of the district. According to hospital sources, the 100-bed hospital has Deputy Director, Pediatrics, Medicine, Forensic Medicine, Surgery, Ophthalmology, Skin and Sex, Orthopedics, Radiology Imaging, Cardiology, Ear, Nose and Throat, Gynecology and Obs, Pathology, Nephrology,
Neurosurgery and Medical. Officers are in the place of total 56 doctors, only 35 out of which 28 are appointed and the rest 7 are working on deputation. 80 people are working instead of 81 nurses, there is a vacancy. At present indoor and outdoor control is being done with 13 medical officers.

Every day about 1500 to 1700 outdoor and about 200 indoor patients are treated. According to the district civil surgeon office sources, the remaining 10 upazilas except the Sadar upazila of the district have 50-bed upazila health complexes. Where there are 176 against 309 doctors. That means there are 133 vacancies. Besides, there are 355 against 384 nurses. There are 29 vacancies. Hospitalized for treatment of sick son. Nazmul Haque said that due to the low number of doctors, he may come twice a day to see patients in the ward.

Because of this maybe we are not getting good service. The service I am getting is not enough. Some medicines are available but have to be bought from outside. Besides, nurses also have some reluctance. Naogaon 250 bed general hospital service supervisor Sufia Khatun said, our hospital has 250 beds, new and old combined. But there is a shortage of doctors and nurses. When we treat one, the other has to wait. And the patients are so stressed that even standing is difficult. Many times you have to hurry and give up. We cannot provide medical services properly.

Many times the patient's parents have to face the cannon. If the number of nurses is more, it is easier to serve the patients. Not only district residents but also from outside districts come here for treatment. He demanded to provide infrastructure along with rapid recruitment of manpower to improve the quality of medical services. There are total 103 clinics in the district. Out of this 75 registered and 28 under registration process. Among them, 30 registered and 11 unregistered in Sadar Upazila. Besides, there are 162 diagnostic. Among them 116 registered and 46 under registration process. Among them, 45 registered and 13 unregistered in Sadar Upazila.

In the last 10 years, clinics and diagnostic centers have doubled. According to the information of District Medicine Administration Office, there are about 3 thousand pharmacies in the district. Everything is moving. Former General Secretary of Bangladesh Private Hospital, Clinic and Diagnostic Owners Association Naogaon branch. Ataur Rahman Khoka said that there is no need for the number of clinics and diagnostic centers that have been built in the district. Many of these are substandard. There is no problem if the number is less, the service should be good. The government has discussed fixing a fee at the district and upazila levels for various tests.

Still, many hold their own fictitious fees. It can't be done. We have fixed a fee from the association to each clinic and diagnostic center from time to time. In the medical field, we are still far behind in Naogaon. Medical college or 250 bed hospital. But no equipment and doctor were provided. Doctors also do not want to take risks. Refers emergency patients.

Because of this, those who have little ability have to go outside the district or to Dhaka for treatment. Naogaon 250 Bed General Hospital Superintendent (Deputy Director) Dr. Zahid Nazrul Chowdhury said that although it is said to be a 250-bed hospital, so far the approval is for 100 beds. And this 100-bed hospital is being run. However, there is not enough manpower required to run this 100-bed hospital.

This is disrupting medical services. Administrative approval for 250 bed general hospital has been given by Ministry of Health. The higher authorities have been informed several times for the conduct of service activities. No response so far. If approved, everything including doctors, nurses and medicine and infrastructure will be doubled.

Besides, the quality of medical services will increase, he said. Sufficient quantity of medicine is being supplied from the hospital. He said that since Naogaon Medical College has no physical infrastructure of its own, their activities are being conducted on the second floor of the old building of the hospital. He said that it is necessary to move the medical college from this building.
