Flood situation worsens in India's Assam, death toll rises to 15

International Desk: The flood situation has further worsened in India's northeastern state of Assam. The death toll in the state has risen to 15. Besides, the water of three rivers is flowing over Bipatsima. 

Meanwhile, the number of people affected by the flood has crossed the 6 lakh mark. In a report on Sunday (June 2), the Indian news agency PTI and The Hindu reported this information. According to the report, floods have occurred in Assam due to the rains after Cyclone Remal. The situation is getting worse day by day.

Three more deaths were reported in the state on Saturday. Due to this, the number of dead in the flood has increased to 15 people. This was informed in the flood bulletin of the Government of Assam.  According to the media, village after village has been swept away by the floods in Assam. State and National Disaster Response Force are carrying out rescue operations.

Apart from humans, 89 animals were also rescued on Saturday. However, the waters of three important rivers of the state are still flowing over the danger zone. The flood situation is unlikely to improve unless the water recedes there. However, as of last Friday, the number of flood-affected people in Assam was 350,000. A day later, on Saturday, it crossed the 6 lakh mark. Nagaon district of the state is the worst affected. Only there the number of flood affected people is more than two and a half lakh. 

At least 10 districts of the state are still affected by floods, according to figures from the Assam Disaster Response Force. Indian press says that Barak is one of the most important rivers of Assam. Since last Thursday, the water of that river has been flowing over the border. Besides, the water of Kopili, a tributary of Brahmaputra, Kushiara, a branch of Barak, is also above the danger level. Roads, bridges and houses were washed away. Many agricultural lands were also affected by the flood. Meanwhile, the three new deaths due to floods in Assam on Saturday were residents of Kachar, Karimganj and Hailakandi districts.

The members of the Disaster Response Force are carrying out rescue operations day and night to deal with the situation. Communication with many places has been lost. Train movement has also been affected.  Apart from this, Assam police and district administration have issued instructions and imposed several restrictions to deal with the flood situation.

Restrictions have also been issued for the movement of locals at night. Vast areas of the capital city of Guwahati are still under water. It should be noted that due to the impact of Cyclone Remal, rain started in Assam from last Tuesday. Heavy to very heavy rains occur in different parts of the state. That is why flood situation is created in many parts of the state. In this situation, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has predicted more heavy rains. Assam's major rivers such as Subansiri, Jiyavarali and Kopili are also receiving more water, which is affecting districts like Tinsukia, Darrang and Nalbari.
