1 killed in clash over land, police station besieged to demand justice for body

Gaibandha Correspondent: Relatives and locals protested by surrounding the police station demanding justice for the dead body in a clash over land in Phulchari, Gaibandha. At that time, the police took control of the situation at the police station and removed the protestors with baton charge and arranged to send the bodies to the morgue.

On Tuesday (March 19) morning, the relatives and locals of the deceased surrounded Phulchari police station, but the police charged them with batons and removed them.

According to eyewitnesses, Nurunnabi Mia, a resident of Dakshin Burail village of Phulchari upazila, had a dispute over land with her neighbor Golzar Mia for a long time. Because of this, on Monday (March 18) morning, when Nurunnabi Mia landed on the disputed land, the opponent Golzar Mia and his men attacked. Some people including Nurannabi Mia were seriously injured. The seriously injured Nurunnabi Mia was taken to Rangpur Medical College Hospital where she died on Tuesday morning while undergoing treatment.

The relatives of the deceased went to Phulchari police station on Tuesday morning with the body demanding justice for the killers, they argued and clashed with the police. At this time, the police baton-charged the protesters. Later, the police dispersed them and took away the body and sent it to the morgue for post-mortem.

The angry crowd formed a human chain in front of the Upazila Parishad to demand justice for this incident. Later Gaibandha Additional Superintendent of Police Abdullah Al Mamun reached the spot and tried to pacify the angry crowd.

Officer-in-charge (OC) of Phulchari police station  Rafikuzzaman Basunia admitted the truth of the incident and said that when the deceased's relatives and villagers came to the police station with the body, there was an argument with the police. Later, the body was taken from them and sent to Gaibandha General Hospital for autopsy.
