Jhenaidah-1 Constituency Member of Parliament Abdul Hai MP is no more

Jhenaidah Representative: Jhenaidah-1 Constituency Member of Parliament, District Awami League President Bir Muktijoddha Md. Abdul Hai MP passed away (Innalillahi wa inna lillah Rajeun). He died at 7 am on Saturday while undergoing treatment at Bamrungrad Hospital in Thailand.

He was suffering from pneumonia for a long time. He was 78 years old at the time of his death. His personal assistant Shahidul Islam confirmed the death news from Thailand. He is survived by his wife, one daughter and two sons. Former state minister and veteran politician Abdul Hai was born in 1952 in Mohammadpur village of Shailkupa upazila. He was the youngest of 3 sons and 2 daughters of father Faizuddin Mollah and mother Chakiran Necha. His education began in the primary school of the neighboring village of Mirzapur. After passing secondary school, he was admitted to Jhenaidah Keshavchandra College. From there he passed BA with merit. During his school life, he got involved in politics while studying in Basantpur Secondary School. In 1968, he got the responsibility of the president of the then subdivision Chhatra League. Run to the side of the workers in danger. Since then his popularity started. In 1969, he was elected as the VP of Govt. KC College Students' Union.

In the same year, he was elected the vice-president of the Greater Jessore District Chhatra League. When the independence war started in 1971, he jumped into the liberation war at the call of Bangabandhu. There he signed the leadership. He was the one who hoisted the first flag of independent Bengal at Jhenaidah, risking his life, ignoring the bloodshed of the anti-independence people. After the independence of the country, he served as the convener of Jhenaidah Jubo League and in 1973 as the Sub-Divisional President of Jubo League. He was the youth sports affairs secretary of the district Awami League in the eighties. In 1987, he was elected the organizing secretary of Jhenaidah district Awami League and later joint general secretary in the council of Jhenaidah district Awami League. In 1996, he served as the acting general secretary of the district Awami League. Elected General Secretary in 1998. He was elected as a member of Parliament from Jhenaidah-1 constituency as a candidate of Bangladesh Awami League in the 8th National Parliament Elections of 2001. BNP came to power in 2001 elections. Awami League candidate won only 58 seats in that election. Notable among these seats was Shailkupa seat of the brave freedom fighter Abdul Hai. After 30 consecutive years of independence, he played a role in keeping Shailkupa seat in the possession of Awami League. He was elected the convener of Jhenaidah district Awami League in 2001. In 2005, Jhenaidah District Awami League President Abdul Hai MP. He was re-elected as a member of parliament as a party candidate of Bangladesh Awami League in the 2008 Ninth National Parliament Election. From 2012 to 2014, he faithfully served as the State Minister of the Ministry of Fisheries and Animal Resources. In 2014, he was again elected as a member of Parliament as a candidate of Bangladesh Awami League in the 10th National Parliament Election. He was elected as the President of Jhenaidah District Awami League for the second time in the Council of 2015 and was elected as a Member of Parliament in the 11th Parliament Election after receiving party nomination in the 2018 National Election.

In 2022, he was elected the district Awami League president for the third time in the district Awami League conference. He was nominated by Awami League in the last 12th National Parliament election and won with a huge vote. Meanwhile, Abdul Hai's death cast a shadow of mourning across Jhenaidah. The leaders and activists of Shailkupa are deeply saddened by the news of his death. As soon as the news of his death was heard, activists rushed to his house in Arappur of Jhenaidah city. Meanwhile, the district Awami League expressed deep grief over the death of Abdul Hai. His funeral and burial are yet to be confirmed from the family.
