Cultivation of beans at low cost in Ulipur, farmers are happy with the price

Kurigram Correspondent:  Farmers are dreaming of more than double the profit by cultivating beans with loft method at low cost in Ulipur of Kurigram. Farmers are happy with the yield and price. A sweet smile appeared on the face of the bean farmer with colorful flowers and green fruits. Nature is adorned with enchanting purple flowers. Even before the start of the season, the bean garden is full of lofts. In the current rabi season, the farmer's dream is swinging in the bean loft. Bean farmers are seeing the possibility of good yield by cultivating beans in advance.

According to the Upazila Agriculture Office, the target level of vegetable cultivation in the upazila this year is about 1,500 hectares. This includes bean cultivation. Beans are one of the winter vegetables. Now early varieties of beans are being cultivated commercially in the area. Farmers are turning to this crop day by day due to low cost and high profit compared to other crops. Apart from this, the upazila agriculture office continues to advise the bean farmers about various types of pest control. 

Various areas of Sarezmin upazila can be seen, early season winter vegetable bean loft. The beans are hanging in abundance. The seeds of this bean have to be sown at the beginning of the month of Shravana. Flowering begins 25 to 30 days after the seedlings emerge. Bean picking starts from one and a half month old plants. Farmers hope that they will get good prices if they bring the beans to the market in advance. Besides, the beans are adorning the loft or the tree almost at home. Housewives are earning extra money by selling beans after meeting their family needs.

Maqbul Hossain, a vegetable farmer of Khajya village in Nefra area of ​​Gunaigach union of the upazila, said that he has developed himself as a successful bean farmer. At present, along with his family members, he is working tirelessly in the bean loft all day long to fulfill the nutritional needs of the family as well as selling them. Last year, he earned almost twice as much money by cultivating beans by spending a small amount of money. This time he cultivated beans in one bigha land. It has cost 6 thousand to 7 thousand rupees. So far the produced beans have been sold for 30 and a half thousand taka. He expects to sell another 15 thousand rupees worth of beans. The soil and climate here are suitable for bean cultivation, so the yield has been good. On the other hand, due to the demand, the price is expected. I am selling 40 to 50 taka per kg of beans in the wholesale market. He said that he will cultivate early varieties of beans in another bigha of land in the future. Many people in the area have become interested in bean farming under his watch.

Besides, Matin Mia, Meher Ali, Jamal Uddin, Ruhul Amin and Kazim Mia among the bean farmers of different areas of the upazila said that last year many of us were in debt for not getting the price for cultivating vegetables. This time, I can breathe a sigh of relief as I am getting good prices by cultivating different types of vegetables including early varieties of beans. They also said that this year the farmers are very happy with the bumper crop of beans as the weather is favorable and there is no pest of spiders.

Deputy Assistant Agriculture Officer Alamgir Hossain said, many farmers have grown beans in my block. Bean yield has also improved. Advising bean growers on various disease and insect control is ongoing. Bean farmers are benefiting a lot due to bumper yield and good market price. 

Upazila agriculture officer and agronomist Md. Mosharf Hossain said that bean is a vegetable rich in protein. Its beetroot can also be eaten as a vegetable. So its demand in the market is huge. A bumper crop of beans has been produced this season due to favorable weather conditions. Bean farmers will be very profitable, he said.
