The airbase was attacked with missiles and rockets on Saturday evening local time. Several US soldiers were confirmed injured in the attack. At least one Iraqi official was also reportedly injured.

A group claiming to be the Islamic Resistance has claimed responsibility for the attack on the air base. According to the US-based Washington Institute for Near East Policy, the group went public in late 2023. It is said to be made up of several Iran-backed armed groups operating in Iraq. The group has claimed several attacks against US forces in recent times.

Al Assad base has been attacked repeatedly in the last few years. The U.S. military said most of the missile attacks were intercepted on Saturday, but some missiles evaded air defenses and hit the base. Attacks by Iran-backed groups in the region have increased since the conflict between Israel and Hamas began on October 7.

US positions are being targeted in Iraq and Syria. The US military and its allies are retaliating against Houthi missile attacks on international shipping in the Red Sea. As a result, the situation is getting more complicated. On Saturday, US forces launched another airstrike against the Houthis. Iran-backed Houthi rebels control most of Yemen. The US military says it has struck a Houthi missile launch site.
