News Desk: An attack was carried out on the motorcade of the National Citizen Party (NCP) while returning from a rally in Gopalganj. The assault was reportedly led by members of the banned student wing, Chhatra League, and activists of the suspended Awami League. When law enforcement agencies were later targeted, police responded by firing tear gas shells, turning the area into a battlefield.
In light of the escalating tension, the district administration has imposed Section 144 in Gopalganj. To restore order, four platoons of Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) personnel have been deployed alongside the army and police.
This information was confirmed at 3:55 PM today (Wednesday, July 16) by Md. Shariful Islam, Public Relations Officer at the BGB Headquarters.
He stated that four platoons of BGB have joined the army and police to assist in controlling the law and order situation in Gopalganj.
As per the latest reports, clashes are ongoing between the attackers and the police, with chase and counter-chase incidents unfolding. Following the attack, NCP leaders have reportedly taken shelter at the Gopalganj Circuit House.
Earlier at 1:35 PM, the banned Chhatra League also stormed the stage of the NCP rally held at the Municipal Park in Gopalganj town. They vandalized sound equipment, microphones, chairs, and launched attacks on NCP leaders and activists present at the event.
