The Identity of Ukraine's New Prime Minister Yulia

International Desk: Economist Yuliya Svyrydenko has been invited to take on the role of Prime Minister in Ukraine’s new government by President Volodymyr Zelensky.

On Monday (14 July), Zelensky called on Yuliya to lead the new government.

At 39 years old, Yuliya is an economist and has been serving as the First Deputy Prime Minister since 2021. She played a key role in recent negotiations on a mineral agreement with the United States.

Additionally, Zelensky has proposed that current Prime Minister Denys Shmyhal take on the role of Defense Minister.

Shmyhal has served as Prime Minister since March 2020. Since Ukraine gained independence from Moscow following the collapse of the Soviet Union in 1991, he has been the longest-serving head of government.

According to Reuters, President Zelensky has taken this step as part of a diplomatic effort to end the war with Russia.

In a post on X, he wrote: “We discussed specific measures to boost Ukraine’s economic potential, expand support programs for Ukrainians, and increase our domestic weapons production. To achieve these goals, we are initiating a reshuffle in Ukraine’s executive branch. Yuliya has been offered to lead the government.”
