International Desk: On April 22, a terrorist attack in Pulwama, Kashmir, ignited a devastating conflict between India and Pakistan. Over the course of 19 days, the two hostile neighbors faced one of the most intense confrontations in recent memory. Alongside nightly border skirmishes between their armies, the conflict escalated to include aerial and drone strikes, as well as retaliatory missile attacks. In short, the situation appeared to be rapidly spiraling toward a full-scale war. Multiple intelligence reports revealed that both nations had reached the brink of deploying nuclear weapons.

However, thanks to U.S. intervention, India and Pakistan agreed to a ceasefire on May 10. Now, 63 days later, Pakistan’s Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has revealed that without that ceasefire, his country might indeed have launched a nuclear attack on India.

On Saturday (July 12), during an event in Islamabad, Sharif discussed the recent India-Pakistan clashes with a group of university students. He stated that 55 Pakistani soldiers were killed during Indian military operations but emphasized that Islamabad had responded in kind.

When asked about the plans for nuclear strikes on India, Sharif responded, “Pakistan’s nuclear program is solely for peace and national defense—not for aggression.”

Following the Pulwama attack, India took several strong measures against Pakistan, including suspending the Indus Waters Treaty. On the night of May 6, India launched a military operation in Pakistan called Operation Sindhur. In retaliation, Pakistan launched Operation Bunyan-ul-Marsus, sparking a four-day clash that only ended with U.S.-brokered ceasefire on May 10.

Both nuclear-armed nations drew significant international concern over the potential escalation. Numerous intelligence sources confirmed that the conflict had indeed reached the threshold of nuclear engagement—a claim repeatedly echoed by former U.S. President Donald Trump.
