International Desk: U.S. President Donald Trump has said, “Russian President Vladimir Putin has surprised many. He speaks beautifully, but then drops bombs on people at night. That’s a problem. I don’t like it.”

Trump made these remarks on Sunday (July 13) while speaking to reporters at Joint Base Andrews in Maryland.

During the briefing, he also announced plans to send Patriot air defense systems to Ukraine. However, he clarified that the exact number of systems had not yet been determined. “They’ll get some, because they need protection,” he said. This statement comes at a time when Trump’s administration has recently confirmed its intent to sell weapons to NATO allies in Europe, enabling them to send those arms to Kyiv.

The Trump administration has expressed growing frustration over Putin’s continued evasion of peace talks to halt Moscow’s aggression.

Trump is scheduled to meet NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte this week, where discussions are expected to center around arms supplies to Ukraine.

In the midst of Rutte’s Washington visit, Trump announced that he would make a “major statement” regarding Russia on Monday.

According to a Sunday report by Axios, citing two anonymous sources, Trump’s upcoming announcement may include the provision of “offensive weapons” for Ukraine.

Having campaigned on a promise to end the Ukraine war swiftly, Trump has grown increasingly disillusioned with Putin’s failure to honor proposed peace deals.

Although Putin has occasionally expressed willingness to consider ceasefires, he recently rejected a U.S.-backed proposal for a 30-day truce, arguing it would give Kyiv time to regroup and rearm.

Since returning to the White House in January, Trump has reduced aid to Kyiv, stating it was becoming a burden on American taxpayers. He also blamed Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy for obstructing the path to peace.

While Ukraine continues to receive weapons approved under former President Joe Biden’s administration, Trump has been reluctant to authorize new military packages.

However, on July 7, Trump announced that he would begin supplying “defensive weapons” to Ukraine.

When asked again on Sunday (July 14) whether new sanctions against Russia were on the table, Trump avoided a direct answer and instead said,
“I’m deeply disappointed in President Putin. I thought he meant what he said. But he speaks so elegantly—and then by night, he’s bombing people. That’s something we don’t like.”
