This time, Trump has dealt a massive tariff blow on the EU and Mexico

International Desk: The President of the United States, Donald Trump, has imposed an additional 30 percent tariff on all goods imported from the European Union (EU) and Mexico. This new tariff will take effect from August 1.

On Sunday (July 13), the news outlet Al Jazeera reported this information.

According to the report, this announcement came after recent negotiations over agreements with these two major trading partners broke down. On Saturday, via two separate letters shared on his social media platform Truth Social, Trump accused Mexico of playing a significant role in the flow of illegal immigrants and drugs into the United States. Meanwhile, the European Union was accused of trade imbalances.

Earlier this week, Trump had announced new tariffs on products from over 20 countries, including Japan, South Korea, Canada, and Brazil. Additionally, a 50 percent tariff was imposed on copper.

Following Trump’s decision, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen stated that the European Union is ready to take necessary measures to protect its interests.

French President Emmanuel Macron called on the EU to firmly protect Europe’s interests. He said that if no agreement is reached, all forms of retaliatory actions should be prepared, including anti-coercion measures by the European Union.

Essentially, this law allows the European Union to retaliate by restricting government procurement contracts and other economic opportunities if a third country exerts political pressure.

Meanwhile, the Mexican government said that during a meeting with U.S. officials in Washington on Friday, they were already informed about Trump’s decision. They described this action as unfair behavior.

Mexico’s President Claudia Sheinbaum said, “I believe the United States and Mexico can come to an agreement on better terms. Keeping calm in such situations is most important.”

Notably, 80 percent of Mexico’s export goods go to the United States, so Trump’s tariff decision could significantly impact the Mexican economy.

Earlier, Trump announced a 35 percent tariff on Canada and a 50 percent tariff on Brazil. In Brazil’s case, the punitive tariff was described by Trump as political retaliation against right-wing former president Jair Bolsonaro.
