News Desk: The Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) A M M Nasir Uddin has said that no political party will be given the 'Shapla' (Water Lily) symbol. He stated, “If the 'Shapla' is allotted as a symbol, it has to be given to Nagorik Oikya.”

He made these remarks in an interview with BBC Bangla.

Regarding applications for registration as political parties, the CEC said, “We have already started the scrutiny. We are reviewing all the applications. Those who are missing documents, we will give them 15 days’ time. After that, if they don’t fulfill the conditions, we won’t be able to grant registration. Only those who meet the conditions according to the law will get registered.”

Nasir Uddin said, “We have many field offices, and they represent us. Around 5,700 people work for us in the field. Through them, we have already started the verification. In many cases, reports have already started coming in.”

The National Citizen Party (NCP) has applied for the 'Shapla' symbol. Regarding the Election Commission’s decision on this, the CEC said, “We considered this matter very seriously within our commission. Our commission has a principle—we don’t make decisions without consensus. We always go with the majority opinion. Nothing is imposed on anyone. This commission consists of five members.”

“Regarding the 'Shapla' symbol, we conducted a lot of investigation and examined the matter. There are some legal issues involved. There’s already a law regarding the national flag. Another point is that NCP applied for the symbol, but earlier Nagorik Oikya also requested it. A delegation from Nagorik Oikya came around eight or ten days ago. Their main focus was the 'Shapla' symbol. They said, 'We applied for Shapla but didn’t get it.’ We kept their application pending. They said, 'Look, we applied earlier; NCP applied later. We are a registered party; NCP is not yet registered.' According to our law, whoever claims first should be given the symbol. So, the opportunity is limited,” he said.

The CEC added, “If 'Shapla' is given as a party symbol, it must be given to Nagorik Oikya. However, due to some legal issues, we decided in the commission meeting that we will not keep 'Shapla' as a symbol. No one will get the 'Shapla' symbol. That is our decision.”
