7 arrested in Barisal for fishing

News Desk: Like the rest of the country, the Department of Fisheries and the law enforcement agencies are conducting operations in the sanctuaries of Hilsa. Seven people have been arrested in Barisal till Monday (March 1) morning for fishing.

The Coast Guard arrested four people for fishing in a sanctuary on the Bagarja river in Mehendiganj sub-district at around 7.30 am this morning. During this time a large number of current nets were recovered.

Earlier in the night, naval police arrested three persons for transporting jatka from the Rupatli Dapadapiya area of ​​Barisal city. Of the three, two were jailed for 20 days and one was fined Tk 5,000 by the executive magistrate of the mobile court.

District Fisheries Officer. Asaduzzaman said the campaign would continue for the next two months to protect fisheries in five of the country's six sanctuaries as per the government's directives. Hilsa has sanctuaries in 72 km area of ​​Meghna, Kalabadar, and Gajaria rivers in Barisal. The operation is being carried out in five of the six sanctuaries in Bhola, Barisal, Patuakhali, Chandpur, Laxmipur, and Shariatpur districts covering an area of ​​432 km in different rivers.
