In the fifth phase, voting is going on in 29 municipalities of the country

News Desk: In the fifth phase, voting is going on in 29 municipalities of 20 districts of the country. Voting begins at 8 am on Sunday (February 28). It will run non-stop till 4 pm. At this stage, voting is being done through Electronic Voting Machine (EVM) in all the municipalities.

There is interest as well as apprehension among the general voters about this. According to the Election Commission (EC), by-elections are being held in four Upazila Parishads and 14 Union Parishads on the same day. Comilla's Debidwar Upazila Parishad by-election is also being held on this day.

Besides, the polling stations declared closed in seven municipalities and ward number 31 of Chittagong City Corporation, ward number 6 of Shailkupa municipality of Jhenaidah, ward number 7 of Pirojpur and ward no. EVM voting is taking place in Chittagong City and Shailkupa. Police, RAB, and BGB members have been deployed to maintain law and order in the constituencies. The magistrate is in the field with them to keep law and order normal.

Traffic restrictions have been imposed on constituencies. On January 19, the EC announced the schedule for the fifth phase of 31 municipal elections. Later, Syedpur municipality was added in the fifth from another step. On the other hand, the voting of Jessore municipality was postponed in the high court.

The EC has indefinitely postponed the Dewanganj municipal election in Jamalpur ahead of the polls. Besides, in the Raozan municipality of Chittagong, candidates for all the posts including mayor and councilor won without contest.

Mirsarai, Bariarhat and Rangunia in Chittagong; Raipur in Laxmipur, Nachol in Chapainawabganj, Habiganj Sadar, Jamalpur Sadar, Madarganj and Islampur; Durgapur and Charghat in Rajshahi; Bogra Sadar, Singair of Manikganj, Bhairab of Kishoreganj, Sadar of Bhola and Char Fashion; Shahrasti and Matlab of Chandpur; Keshabpur in Jessore, Syedpur in Nilphamari, Madaripur Sadar and Shibchar; Haragachh in Rangpur, Brahmanbaria Sadar, Kaliganj and Maheshpur in Jhenaidah; Joypurhat Sadar, Nandail in Mymensingh and Kaliganj in Gazipur.
