The contribution of road and water transport sector to the economy is 1 lakh 8 thousand crore

News Desk: The contribution of road and shipping sector to the economy is 1 lakh 8 thousand 500 crore. In this case, the contribution of road transport sector is 1 lakh 83 thousand 400 crore and the contribution of shipping is 14 thousand 100 crore. The information was released at the unveiling ceremony of the publication of Private Commercial Mechanical and Non-Mechanical Roads and Shipping Survey 2019 on Monday. The survey was conducted by the Bangladesh Bureau of Statistics (BBS) under the Modernization of National Accounts Statistics project.

Secretary of Statistics and Information Management Mohammad Yamin Chowdhury was present as the chief guest at the function held at BBS Auditorium, Agargaon. Chairman of Bangladesh Road Transport Nur Mohammad Majumder was the special guest.

Director General of Bangladesh Bureau of Statistics Tajul Islam presided over the function. According to the survey, the total number of vehicles is 26 lakh 59 thousand 256. Of these, the number of passenger transport is 24 lakh 22 thousand 129. Of these, the number of mechanical vehicles is 16 lakh 7 thousand 694. The number of freight transport is 2 lakh 36 thousand 129. Of these, 1 lakh 94 thousand 316 are mechanical transport. The number of non-mechanical transport is 6 lakh 43 thousand 234. The total number of manpower working in vehicles is 31 lakh 8 thousand. The number of manpower working in the road transport sector is 33 lakh 7 thousand people. The total cost of operating the vehicles is Tk 84,500 crore. Of this, salary allowance is Tk 14,000 crore. Expenditure in the energy sector is Tk 26,900 crore. The total cost of operating the vessel is Tk. 11930 crore. Of this, salary allowance is Tk 240 crore and fuel is Tk 6480 crore. BRTA Chairman Noor Mohammad Majumder said, "According to BRTA's calculations, we are registering 4 lakh vehicles every year.

" There is some difference between our survey and the BBS survey. However, we hope that we will benefit from the results of this survey. "We are creating a GDP baseline," said Mohammad Yamin Chowdhury, secretary of the statistics and information management department.

These statistics tell us that we are well ahead in this sector as well. We are moving forward, especially in the shipping and road sectors. At present, the contribution of GDP in this sector is 6 percent.
