CNI Desk: Bangladesh all-rounder Shakib Al Hasan took two-day break from his individual preparation camp at Bangladesh Krira Shikha Protishthan (BKSP) in Savar, said officials on Friday.

The premier all-rounder, who is serving a one-year ban from ICC for failing to report corrupt approaches, started his comeback mission in the lone sports institute situated in Savar from September 5.

According to BKSP’s public relations officer Mohammad Ashrafuzzaman the former BKSP student is expected to return to the institute today (September 12).

“He had taken a break for two days and we are expecting him to return on Saturday,” Asharfuzzaman told media while updating them about his whereabouts.

“We cannot tell whether he will resume practice tomorrow or not as it depends entirely on him and the coaches involved with the process of his comeback plan,” he said.

Shakib will be free from October 29 after being exonerated from his year-long ban on October 28 and if everything goes according to plan then he is supposed to return to international cricket with the second Test of the imminent Bangladesh Team’s tour in Sri Lanka.

BCB president Nazmul Hasan has already hinted that Shakib could possibly play the second Test of the upcoming three-match series against Sri Lanka and chances are high that the all-rounder will be flown to the island nation just ahead of the opening Test in order to adapt to the conditions.

Bangladesh’s tour of Sri Lanka, which was scheduled for July-August, was postponed because of the COVID-19 pandemic. Bangladesh are expected to travel to Sri Lanka on September 27 and will play two three-day matches against their High Performance squad which will travel with the main team. Bangladesh are also likely to play a three-day match against Sri Lanka A from October 18 while the Test series is likely to begin on October 24 in Kandy.

BCB is planning a week-long residential camp ahead of the upcoming tour of Sri Lanka. The residential camp is set to begin on September 21 while the BCB will conduct COVID-19 Tests in four phases with the other three tests scheduled on September 18, 21 and 24, with the final test scheduled 72 hours before they take the flight to Sri Lanka.

As Shakib is not expected to be part of the residential camp nor travel with the team to Sri Lanka and can join them only after completing the ban, he opted to go to BKSP to take his intense individual preparation to mark his much-awaiting return to competitive cricket after a long hiatus.

Shakib returned home from the USA on September 2 after five and a half months and returned to training programme under the watchful eyes of two of his childhood coaches Nazmul Abedin and Mohammad Salahuddin as the duo were involved with Shakib since he joined the institute as a student to take cricket as a profession.

BKSP, the cradle of Shakib, who extended their heartfelt support to its proud cadet, made no procrastination to trim grasses from the field and to activate the bowling machine for him.

It was learnt that Shakib will start doing his session at the center-wicket from the coming week as the groundsmen prepared the wicket for their golden-eye boy while the opening week went mostly on regaining his fitness as well as spending time in the indoor with bat and ball.

Along with childhood mentors Nazmul Abedeen Fahim and Mohamamd Salahuddin, the duo who sketched out the plan of his return to cricket, there are few others who are working behind him.

They are BKSP’s athletic coach Abdullah Hel Kafi, who works for Shakib’s fitness and BKSP’s boxing coach Ariful Karim, who works for him to get his hand’s strength and agility back. Along with them, a physio is working with Shakib.

He was accommodated in the Modhumoti Guesthouse from where he is intensely working. Both Shakib and his supporting coaches are tightlipped about the preparation.
