Former Indian President Pranab Mukherjee, who has been in hospital for more than three weeks after undergoing brain surgery, is no more. The 64-year-old former president died at the Army Research and Referral Hospital in New Delhi on Monday afternoon.

Earlier on Monday morning, a statement from the Army Research and Referral Hospital said the physical condition of the icon, one of the most iconic figures in Indian politics, was deteriorating. He is said to be in septic shock due to a lung infection.

Pranab Mukherjee was also diagnosed with the epidemic coronavirus after being admitted to the hospital for brain surgery. The former Indian president has been in a coma since the surgery.

Pranab Mukherjee's son Abhijit Mukherjee has confirmed the death of his father in a tweet. "With a heavy heart, I would like to inform you that despite the best efforts of the doctors of the Army Research and Referral Hospital and the prayers of the people of India, my father passed away a while ago," he tweeted. I thank you all.

On August 9, Pranab Mukherjee fell in the bathroom of his residence on Rajaji Marg in New Delhi and sustained serious head injuries. The next day he was admitted to the Army Research and Referral Hospital in New Delhi. The doctors decided to operate on him because of the blood clots in his brain.

The former president of the country tested positive for corona before surgery. Pranab's condition has not improved since then.

For more than five decades, Pranab Mukherjee has been the lifeblood of Congress, one of India's leading political parties. He served as President from 2012 to 2017 during the Congress rule. He resigned from the post of President of India in 2016.

He held important ministries during the tenure of former Prime Ministers of India Indira Gandhi, Rajiv Gandhi, PV Narasimha Rao and Manmohan Singh. The 13th president of the country received the country's highest civilian award 'Bharat Ratna' in 2019 after stepping down from power.
