International Desk: 54 Ugandan soldiers were killed in a terrible attack in the East African country of Somalia. The deceased were working there as peacekeepers. Last week, a military base in the country was attacked by the militant group Al-Shabaab. The news agency Reuters reported this information in a report on Sunday (June 4) citing the president of Uganda. Ugandan President Yoweri Museveni said on Saturday that 54 Ugandan peacekeepers were killed in an attack by the militant group al-Shabaab on a military base in Somalia last week, according to reports.

Museveni said the Uganda People's Defense Forces (UPDF) had recaptured the base from the Islamist group despite losing control of the base following the incident. President Yoweri Museveni said, "Our troops have shown tremendous resilience and have reorganized themselves." As a result, the military base was recaptured by Tuesday. Al-Shabaab fighters targeted the military base in Bulamar, 130 kilometers (80 miles) southwest of Somalia's capital Mogadishu, early Friday morning, according to Reuters. Museveni said last week that there had been casualties among Ugandan soldiers.

But he did not give any details about the attack on Ugandan soldiers serving in the African Union Transition Mission (ATMIS) in Somalia. On the other hand, the militant group al-Shabaab said it carried out a suicide bomb attack on the military base and killed 137 soldiers. The terrorist group has been fighting since 2006 to oust Somalia's Western-backed government and establish an Islamic regime. And for this reason, al-Shabaab members often carry out bomb and gun attacks targeting civilians and military installations in the country's military bases, hotels and busy roads.
