International Desk: Russia has taken over the presidency of the United Nations Security Council. The Security Council has a total of 15 countries with permanent and non-permanent members. Each member country holds the presidency for one month on a rotational basis. The Council will be in charge of Russia from today 1st till April. However, there has been a lot of discussion about this year's presidency of Russia. Because it was strongly opposed by Ukraine and its Western allies. Russia previously held the presidency in February 2022. In the same month, the country attacked Ukraine. In addition, Russia took over the Security Council at a time when the International Criminal Court (ICC) issued an arrest warrant against the country's President Vladimir Putin on charges of war crimes. This court, however, is not a subsidiary body of the United Nations.

Meanwhile, the United States, an important permanent member of the Security Council, could not prevent Russia from taking over the presidency despite Ukraine's objections. The country said that Russia is also a permanent member of the Council. As a result, there was no way to stop them. The responsibility of the Presidency is only to conduct the proceedings. However, Russia's permanent ambassador to the United Nations, Vassily Nabenzia, told Russian news agency Tass News that he plans to observe several debates. This includes arms control.

The Russian envoy also said he would discuss a 'new world order', which he said would replace the 'unicentric world order'. Ukraine has reacted negatively to the Russian presidency. The country's foreign minister, Dmytro Kuleba, said, 'This is the best April Fool's joke.' Mykhailo Podoliak, an adviser to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, said, 'This is yet another violation of international law...a country that has launched a war of aggression, violated humanitarian and criminal law, violated the UN Charter. have ignored the safety of nuclear weapons, they cannot lead the world's main security agency.''Besides Russia and the US, the permanent members of this council are the UK, France and China.
