International Desk: Türkiye has accepted Finland's accession to NATO. Turkey's parliament unanimously accepted Finland into the alliance on Thursday (March 30). After that, there was no obstacle for the country to join NATO. Before last week, the Hungarian Parliament gave the green signal. Türkiye was the only remaining member of the 30-member NATO alliance. It was impossible for Finland to join NATO without Turkey's permission. Because, according to the rules, for a new country to join NATO, the consent of all member countries is required. Türkiye became the last country to approve Finland's accession to NATO. However, Türkiye initially objected to Finland.

After nearly a year of negotiations, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan assured earlier this month that he no longer had any objections to Finland's accession. In fact, its reflection was also seen in the voting of the Parliament on Thursday. All Turkish MPs voted for Finland. It is only a matter of time before Finland joins as the 31st NATO country. Before this, this Nordic state adopted the policy of equidistance. They did not participate in any military alliance. But Finland changed its policy after Russia invaded Ukraine. Shows interest in joining NATO. In fact, Finland has a 1300 km border with Russia. As a result, they are afraid of Russia.

That is why they wanted to join NATO quickly. NATO chief Jens Stoltenberg expressed his happiness after receiving Turkey's green signal. He thanked Turkey. Meanwhile, Sweden also wanted to join NATO with Finland. Sweden's roads are not so smooth, however. Türkiye has stated that they will not accept Sweden's accession in any way. Because Sweden supports terrorist groups in Turkey. Turkey complains that Sweden does not want to recognize Kurdish separatists as terrorists. Not only that, but recently, Turkey has been involved in the burning of the Holy Quran in Sweden. NATO has been discussing the whole issue with Turkey for a long time. Discussions are ongoing on how to resolve the issues. However, Sweden has said it is still optimistic about joining NATO.
