International Desk: Ali Sherif Al-Emadi, the former finance minister of Qatar, is going to face trial in the criminal court on charges of bribery and money embezzlement. Charges of bribery and money embezzlement have been filed against this former finance minister who was arrested in 2021. The country's state-run news agency Qatar News Agency (QNA) reported this information in a brief statement on Sunday. QNA said Al-Emadi was arrested in May 2021, but little information about his case has been released.

But he is going to face trial along with an unspecified number of defendants on the charges. According to the QNA report, the evidence obtained from the case documents proved the involvement of the accused in the crime charged against them. The Attorney General has issued an order to transfer the case to the criminal court to prosecute the accused for the crime. Evidence of bribery, embezzlement of public funds, abuse of office and power, loss of public funds and money laundering have been found against the accused in the case.

However, the report did not elaborate on how much money the former finance minister is accused of stealing. Al-Emadi rose to fame in the Gulf nation after ascending to the throne as Qatar's current ruling emir and overseeing the country's National Bank, which became the Middle East's largest lender. Al-Emadi was once one of the most influential officials in this Middle Eastern country. He also served as the chairman of the National Bank of Qatar, the board of the sovereign wealth fund and the chairman of the executive board of Qatar Airways. However, Al-Emadi did not publicly comment on the case. He said the investigation into the case was related to Al-Emadi's capacity as finance minister. It has nothing to do with his position at the sovereign fund or the bank.
