Voting is underway in Gaibandha by-election

News desk: The canceled by-election of Gaibandha-5 (Saghata-Phulchari) constituency is being held again today, December 4 (Wednesday). Voting started from 8:30 am. Which will run non-stop till 4:30 pm.

Earlier on Tuesday (January 3) election equipment including EVMs were sent to centers from Phulchari and Saghata upazila election offices. Gaibandha Superintendent of Police gave a briefing on the responsibility of the selection of members of law and order in Napiterhat Government Primary School of Phulchari Upazila. Kamal Hossain.

This is the first time in the history of Bangladesh that polling is being re-polled in a by-election which was stopped after seeing the CC footage in all the centers of a parliamentary constituency. In order to prevent irregularities in this election which is being discussed all over the country, all the 145 polling stations of 17 unions have CC cameras. A large number of law enforcement personnel are engaged in election work. Apart from this, there are 8 teams of RAB, a bomb disposal unit of RAB, 5 platoons of BGB, 5 striking forces, 19 executive magistrates, two judicial magistrates and 6 mobile teams consisting of police and Ansar in the election field.

145 newly appointed presiding officers, 952 assistant presiding officers and 1 thousand 904 polling officers are working as polling officers in the centers of two upazilas. 3 lakh 39 thousand 4 voters will exercise their right to vote in 952 booths of 145 polling stations in Saghata and Phulchhari upazilas of this constituency. Among them, 1 lakh 69 thousand 862 female voters and 1 lakh 69 thousand 142 male voters. Voting is being conducted in 113 polling stations in plain and 32 polling stations in two upazilas.

Regional Election Officer of Dhaka Region Faridul Islam will perform the duty of Returning Officer. Apart from this, Gaibandha district election officer Abdul Mottalib and Naogaon district election officer Kamrul Islam in Saghata upazila will perform the duties of Assistant Returning Officer in Phulchari upazila.

In the Gaibandha-5 seat by-election, Awami League's nominated candidate Mahmud Hasan Ripon has the boat symbol, Jatiya Party's AHM Golam Shahid Ranju has the plow symbol, Alternative Bangladesh candidate Advocate Jahangir Alam has the Kula symbol and independent candidate Syed Md. Mahbubur Rahman is contesting with truck symbol. However, another independent candidate of the apple symbol, Nahiduzzaman Nishad, has announced boycotting the vote.

The seat fell vacant on the death of the late Deputy Speaker of the Jatiya Sangsad, Advocate Fazle Rabbi Mia, on July 23 last year. On October 12, Election Commission canceled the election of Gaibandha-5 constituency due to various irregularities. After two rounds of investigation, the by-election is being held again in this seat on Wednesday.
