International Desk: Students of Mahatma Gandhi University (MJU) in Kerala, the southernmost state of India, can spend three months maternity leave in case of pregnancy. All the students of University Honors (Honours) and Post Graduate Department eighteen years and above can enjoy this facility.

The decision was taken at a syndicate meeting of MJU on Friday, the country's largest news agency Press Trust of India (PTI) said in a report.

According to the PTI report, the university authorities had earlier formed a committee to decide how long the maternity leave of the students would be. When the committee presented its report and recommendations before the syndicate on Friday, the syndicate members agreed to it.

Officials of the university administration said that according to the decision of the syndicate, students can apply for this leave once or twice during their honors or masters course. If a student applies for maternity leave more than once while studying in Honors course, that application will not be entertained a second time. The same rule will be applicable to the students of Post Graduate Department also.

However, if the student applies for leave again after passing honors and getting admission in post graduate department, then the authority will grant it.

This maternity leave will be separate and distinct. It shall not be confused with university or any other public holiday. Officials also said that after taking maternity leave once in a course, if a student ever suffers a miscarriage while in that course, she will be given 14 days leave.

The university administration also said that if a student misses any semester examination due to maternity leave, it will be coordinated with the next semester. In this case, the head or chairman of the department of the student will be in charge of coordinating the matter.
