Newsdesk: Several civil society organisations across Bangladesh organised various events to celebrate #MaitriDiwas to mark the day when India recognised Bangladesh as an independent, sovereign nation in 1971. Memorial events were also held to remember the sacrifices of brave martyrs who made supreme sacrifices for the liberation of Bangladesh.

High Commissioner Pranay Verma attended the events organised by ‘Sampriti Bangladesh’ and ‘Swadhinata Foundation’ in Dhaka, where he underlined the special nature of India-Bangladesh relations rooted in the shared sacrifices of 1971 Liberation War and stressed the need for the younger generation to be educated to carry forward this glorious legacy.

During one of these events, Hon’ble Liberation War Affairs Minister AKM Mozammel Huq said that India is a trusted and a tested neighbour of Bangladesh. Hoping for the friendly relations between the two countries to get stronger, he added that India has always respected and supported the principles on which Bangladesh is founded.

Leaders, experts and civil society members from various fields, including Muktijoddhas, academia and youth attended the events and shared their memories of the Liberation war.
