International Desk: At least seven people were killed in an explosion in a vehicle carrying oil workers in the northern part of Afghanistan. The explosion occurred in Mazar-e-Sharif city in the northern province of Balkh on Tuesday morning, local police said.

Balkh Province Police Spokesman Mohammad Asif Wajeri said that an explosion took place on a bus carrying employees of the Oil Company of Hairatan Port in Balkh Province at around 7 am today. Seven people were killed. Besides, at least six others were injured in the blast.

However, the cause of the explosion was not immediately known. Wajeri said that the police have started an investigation into the incident in Balkh. Besides, the police are searching for the suspected criminals.

'The bomb was placed in a car on the side of the road. The explosion took place shortly after the bus carrying oil company workers arrived there,' said Asif Wajeri.

One of Afghanistan's major dry ports is located in the city of Hayratan in Balkh province; which is near the Uzbekistan border. Hayratan is well connected with Central Asia by rail and road.

However, it was not immediately known who was behind the explosion on Tuesday. Also, no group has yet claimed responsibility for the blast. The withdrawal of the US-led military in August last year ended decades of war in Afghanistan.

After that, the government of the Taliban, an armed group that came to power in Afghanistan, has repeatedly promised to normalize the security situation, but there have been constant attacks in the country.

Last month, at least 19 people were killed when a school bus exploded in the town of Aybak in Samangan province. 24 others were injured. Last May, at least 9 people were killed in a series of blasts in Mazar-e-Sharif city. At the same time, two people were killed in an attack on a mosque in the capital, Kabul.

One of the Taliban's main rivals in Afghanistan is the local militant group IS, which is affiliated with the Islamic State (IS). The group claimed responsibility for the attack on Mazar-e-Sharif. However, this militant group did not take responsibility for the Kabul blast.
