International Desk: A 5.6-magnitude earthquake hit the western Java province of the Asian country of Indonesia. 162 people have been killed so far in this earthquake on Monday. Besides, numerous houses have collapsed.

Many people are still trapped under the rubble of these schools, houses and other structures that collapsed due to the strong earthquake. Officials fear that the death toll may rise. It is reported that most of those killed so far are school students and children.

Java was shaken by an earthquake at 1:21 PM local time on Monday, Indonesia. School was going on at that time. As schools were destroyed in the quake, many students were trapped under the rubble. Rescuers are trying hard to rescue those trapped under the rubble.

The epicenter of the earthquake was Cianjur, a mountainous area in West Java. It is the most populous province in Indonesia. So many people were injured in the earthquake that people were treated in the basement of the hospital car park in Cianjur. On the other hand, doctors can be seen stitching up the injured by torchlight.

"Everything below me collapsed," a 48-year-old woman named Kuku told Reuters from the hospital. I was buried under the children.'

Kuku also told Reuters that he was able to bring his two children out of the rubble. Then brought them to the hospital. But one of her children is still missing.

An Indonesian police spokesman was quoted by news agency Antara News as saying that hundreds of policemen were sent to the scene on Tuesday morning local time. They are tasked with finding and rescuing the injured.

West Java Governor Ridwan Kamil said that they confirmed that 162 people were killed in Monday's earthquake. He also said that people are still stuck in some inaccessible areas. It will increase the number of dead. They are working keeping in mind that the number of injured and dead will increase with time.

Landslides have also occurred in some places due to the earthquake. Due to the landslides, an area called Qiuzhenang has been completely cut off from communication. Rescuers cannot go there. Rescue work is also being disrupted due to power outages.

Meanwhile, after the big earthquake hit, Java was shaken by at least 80 more small tremors (aftershocks). Such tremors are often felt in earthquake-prone Indonesia.
