A young man commits suicide in Bhujpur after being accused of theft

Mohammad Zipon Uddin, Chittagong: In Bhujpur of Fatikchari, Jubo League activist Rafiqul Islam (45) was beaten up and ransom was collected. Unable to bear this insult, Jubo League activist Rafiqul Islam committed suicide by drinking poison. On Monday (August 15) around 8 am, he died while undergoing treatment at Chittagong Medical College (CHMEC) Hospital. On Sunday afternoon, Rafiqul drank poison to commit suicide at his home. He is a Jubo League worker of Ward No. 2 of Datmara Union and father of two daughters. The fact of the incident has been confirmed by Sramik League leader Abul Hashem, uncle and father-in-law of the slain Jubo League worker. He said that he has filed a complaint against the accused in the police station for beating up his nephew Rafiqul and extorting ransom on the charge of stealing a mobile phone. It is reported that due to a business dispute, a design engineer of Hayako Bek Bazaar area suspected Rafiq of stealing a mobile phone. On Sunday morning some people took Rafiq to Jubo League leader Kamruzzaman Kamal's office and beat him for four hours. Later, Rafiq's relatives rescued him by paying a cash ransom. According to sources, in the afternoon of this incident, Rafiq drank poison at his house. When the locals took him to Manik Doctor's shop in Balutila Bazar for treatment, he was sent to Chamek Hospital as his condition was serious and Rafiq's family filed a written complaint at Bhujpur police station. Bhujpur Police Station OC Md. Helal Uddin Farooqui said that the family of Heako Jubo League worker Rafiq has complained of beating and ransom for the accusation of mobile theft. His family members said that he died in Chamek Hospital this morning. Preparations are underway for the post-mortem and burial of the body and the case is also being prepared on behalf of his family.
