International Desk: More than 6 million people have fled Ukraine since the Russian invasion. The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) said in a statement. Russia invaded Ukraine on February 24 after a month-long standoff with the United States. As of May 11, 8,029,605 people had fled Ukraine, according to figures released by the United Nations on Thursday (May 12).

The agency also said that most of the people fleeing Ukraine have taken refuge in neighboring Poland. Ukrainian men between the ages of 18 and 60 could not leave the country for military service. That is why 90 percent of the refugees are women and children. However, since the beginning of the war, the tendency of refugees to leave the country on a daily basis across the Ukrainian border has decreased somewhat. In March, 3.4 million Ukrainians left the country. However, 1.5 million people left the country in April. Since the beginning of May, about 493,000 Ukrainians have sought refuge abroad, and the United Nations estimates that more than 6 million people could flee Ukraine this year.

A study by the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) says 6 million people have been internally displaced in the country. Ukraine's Finance Minister Sergei Marchenko told Reuters on Thursday that his country was forced to spend ০ 6.3 billion on the war with Russia. He said the money was spent on emergency relief work, from buying and repairing weapons for internally displaced people.

He also said that Ukraine needed more emergency assistance. According to the Ukrainian Ministry of Social Policy, 2.7 million people are officially registered as internally displaced, although the actual number is thought to be much higher. Before the war in Ukraine, the population was 36 million. Except for the Crimean peninsula and two other territories previously controlled by pro-Russian separatists.
