Two days before the election, the candidate of the boat was declared the winner

News Desk: As the candidature of the opposition was canceled as per the direction of the court, the candidate of Awami League nominated boat symbol has been declared the uncontested winner in Kanthalbari Union of Kurigram Sadar Upazila just two days before the voting in the third phase Union Parishad election. Returning Officer and Upazila Election Officer Hawladar Mohammad Kamrul Hasan made the announcement on Thursday (November 25) night.

District Election Officer Jahangir Alam Rakib confirmed the information around 11:30 pm. According to the Returning Officer's Office, the third phase of the Union Parishad elections will be held on November 28 in Kanthalbari. Bangladesh Awami League-backed candidate Redwanul Haque Dulal was contesting for the post of chairman of the union with the boat symbol and independent candidate Bir Muktijoddha Abdul Haque with the horse symbol. After submitting the nomination papers, the Returning Officer declared the nomination papers of Abdul Haque canceled in the selection phase. Abdul Haque later appealed to the high court to return his candidature if the order was upheld.

The Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) has said that there is no legal basis for Abdul Haque to run in the by-elections as per the order of the Appellate Division Chamber of the Supreme Court. As a result, the Returning Officer issued a public notice on Thursday night announcing the cancellation of Abdul Haque's candidature.

At the same time, Redwanul Haque Dulal, the candidate for the boat symbol, was declared the uncontested winner. Returning Officer Hawladar Mohammad Kamrul Hasan said the valid candidate for the post of chairman of Kanthalbari Union has been declared the uncontested winner as per the instructions of the Election Commission. However, elections will be held on the scheduled date for general members and reserved seats.
