News Desk: Abdel Fattah al-Burhan, the country's ruling council chief and army chief, has declared a state of emergency in Sudan following the arrest of several members of his cabinet, including the prime minister, in a coup.

At the same time, he dissolved the Interim Sovereign Council and the government. The British news agency Reuters says the army seized power in Sudan in a coup on Monday. Most of the cabinet members have been arrested and the interim government has been dissolved. Meanwhile, pro-democracy people have taken to the streets to protest against the military's takeover of power. Gunfire was heard at the protest site and several people were injured. Army officer Abdel Fattah al-Burhan is the head of the country's sovereign council.

The council shares power with the ruling government. After the coup, the army took control of most of the country's government offices, ministries and media. Sudan's information ministry says Prime Minister Abdallah Hamdak has been placed under house arrest and later transferred to an undisclosed location for refusing to make a statement in support of the coup.

The ministry says millions of people have taken to the streets to protest the coup. The bomber struck shortly after noon in front of an army headquarters in the capital, Khartoum. At least 12 people were injured in the shootings, protesters said in a statement posted on Facebook. However, no detailed information has been given in this regard.
