Police failed in 21 months, PBI arrested in 28 days of investigation

News Desk: Abdur Rahman alias Lal (24) is one of the accused in the murder case of Raihanul Islam alias Sajib (28), a sensational expatriate from Chittagong. He had been on the run for almost 21 months after the murder. In the meantime, the police released him as they could not arrest him. Abdur Rahman was shown as a fugitive and a charge sheet was filed against six accused. But the court did not accept the chargesheet and ordered the Police Bureau of Investigation (PBI) to investigate the case further.

The PBI arrested Abdur Rahman, one of the accused in the case, who had been on the run for nearly 21 months after just 28 days of investigation following a court order. He was arrested on Thursday (September 30) night from the Moulvibazar area next to the Diamond Cement Factory in Karnafuli Upazila. Abdur Rahman's village home is in Shikalbaha Ward No. 3 CDA Tech area of ​​Karnafuli upazila. His father's name is Oli Ahmed. According to PBI sources, the accused abducted Raihan, a Dubai expatriate, from Karnafuli Upazila on January 17 last year to collect ransom. He was abducted by a woman named Sumi, whom he had known for a long time. A ransom of Tk 15 lakh was demanded from him. Meanwhile, the accused wrapped a muffler around Raihan's neck so that he could not shout. At one point, Raihan agreed to pay the ransom, but his muffler was parted. Immediately Raihan screams for survival. The accused became enraged and killed him by suffocation and left Raihan's body in Shikalbaha area of ​​Karnafuli upazila. His body was recovered from Shikalbaha area of ​​the upazila on January 17. Ataur Rahman, the father of the deceased, filed a murder case against the unidentified accused at Karnafuli police station on the same day. After investigating the case, Sub-Inspector (SI) of Karnafuli Police Station Rupak Kanti Das filed a chargesheet in the court on June 22. In the chargesheet, he said he had received information that a total of eight people were involved in the murder.

But as it was not possible to identify the names and addresses of the two accused, they were asked to be acquitted. At the same time, in the charge sheet, he mentioned one accused as a fugitive and mentioned the names of six people. But the court did not accept the chargesheet and directed the PBI to investigate the case further. Following the court order, PBI handed over the investigation to Sub-Inspector (SI) Jaheduzzaman Chowdhury of Chittagong Metro Superintendent of Police Naima Sultana Unit. PBI official Jaheduzzaman took charge of the investigation on September 4 and was able to arrest fugitive accused Abdur Rahman on Thursday.

PBI official and SI Jaheduzzaman said Abdur Rahman, one of the accused in the Raihan murder case, had been on the run for about 21 months. After getting the responsibility of investigating the case, I inquired about him. I finally arrested him from Karnafuli Upazila on Thursday night. Today (Friday) he has been sent to the court showing his arrest in the Raihan murder case. The operation to identify and arrest the other accused involved in the incident is continuing.
