Cox's Bazar Correspondent: The price of sacrificial animals is increasing in Teknaf. The government announced a halt to animal imports across the border, including Myanmar. Since then the price of animals has been rising. If the price of cattle increases at this rate, many people will be in crisis with sacrifices. Livestock buyers, including traders from the Myanmar-centric corridor, the only one in the south, have reported such a crisis.

Meanwhile, the government stopped importing cattle from Myanmar to Teknaf Shahpari Island, the only corridor in southern Chittagong, on Friday, citing losses to the country's farmers. Soon after, the people concerned are talking about the sacrificial animal crisis of Ukhia-Teknaf and the people of South Chittagong. Besides, the price of cattle has increased two to three times in the market.

President Master Jahed Hossain said, "There has been a crisis in Cox's Bazar, including Teknaf, due to the closure of cattle from Myanmar." The animal is going out of purchase. The low-income people are struggling to buy animals for sacrifice. He drew the attention of the Prime Minister and the Minister of Animal Resources to resolve the crisis.

Teknaf Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) Parvez Chowdhury said, "The import of cattle from Myanmar has been stopped on the instructions of the government to encourage the country's farmers and take into account the Corona epidemic."

Meanwhile, Cox's Bazar district is home to 35 lakh people including 11 lakh Rohingyas. Most of these people's sacrificial animals depend on cattle coming from Myanmar. Besides, the price of cattle in the market has increased two to three times due to the closure of cattle from Myanmar. As a result, about ten thousand people in the region are worried about sacrificial animals.

According to the search, 3,130 cows and buffaloes were coming from Myanmar to the Shahpari Island corridor in Teknaf on Wednesday and Thursday. In contrast, the government has received a revenue of 15 lakh 75 thousand rupees. Earlier, 25,006 cows and 4,256 buffaloes were imported from Myanmar in May and June. The customs department has earned revenue of one crore 50 lakh 73 thousand rupees for import.

Former MP Abdur Rahman Badi said, ‘About ten thousand people in his region are worried about sacrificial animals as cattle have stopped coming from Myanmar. On top of that there are 11 lakh Rohingyas living here. Besides, the number of farmers is less in South Chittagong region.

He said, "Due to the lockdown, farmers from the northern region, including Dhaka, are not bringing cattle here." The price of animals in the market is skyrocketing. In this situation, there is a crisis of sacrificial animals in Cox's Bazar and South Chittagong. In such a situation, I am requesting the concerned people including the Prime Minister to resolve this crisis by opening the only corridor on the Myanmar border with special consideration. '

Abu Syed, a cattle trader, said, "There is a crisis ahead as the import of livestock from Myanmar has stopped. Recently, the price of cows and buffaloes has increased several times in the central markets. At present, sacrificial animals are being sold at a price of Rs 30,000.

Nurul Bashar, general secretary of Teknaf Upazila Awami League, alleged that a gang was actively importing animals illegally and collecting tolls in the name of the administration by keeping the Teknaf corridor through the Myanmar border closed.

"The corridor needs to be kept open as before," he said. Or many people will not be able to sacrifice animals because they do not have enough animals. Without it, smuggling will increase. Besides, the government will lose revenue.
