News Desk: Telecommunications regulator BTRC is going to start implementing the technology from the beginning of next year to stop illegal and fake mobile handsets.

If the technology is turned on, it will not be possible to keep the illegal handset in the hands of the customer. No other operator's SIM will work. The regulator is going to implement this initiative taken in 2012 after 8 years.

BTRC chairman Zahurul Haque told the media that the tender process for the supply and operation of National Equipment Identity Register (NEIR) technology to stop illegal mobile handsets is nearing completion. The implementation of this technology will start from the beginning of next year.

BTRC had been warning buyers in advance about buying mobile handsets. Before buying a mobile handset, you have to check the validity of the set through IMEI. You have to take the receipt of purchase of the handset from the seller.

What is IMEI number?

IMEI or International Mobile Equipment Identity Number is a 15-digit number that is programmed into a mobile handset. This number basically carries the identity of the mobile handset. This number indicates which area the phone can be used in and in which factory it is made. This IMEI number is usually used to track the location of a handset if it is lost or stolen.

In addition, when buying a new phone, the IMEI number of the phone can be used to know if the phone has ever been used before. Changing the IMEI number carries the risk of compromising personal security as well as the security of financial transactions.

How to verify the original handset

The method of verifying the validity of the mobile phone is to go to the message option of the mobile phone and enter the KYD space 15 digit IMEI number and send it to 16002. The IMEI of the respective handset can be immediately known from the printed sticker on the packet of the mobile phone or by dialing * # 06 #. The IMEI number is different for each phone. With this specific number it is possible to identify the location of a specific mobile in the mobile network.
